Title: A Hint Before Prying

Series: Chronicle

Writer: P E Leody

SYNOPIS

PAGE 1

A mother takes her daughter Jo to school. The school has a wire fence around it to stop balls being lost over it.

MOTHER: DON'T WORRY JOSEPHINE, THE FIRST DAY IS ALWAYS THE HARDEST.

JO: O GRADY SAYS 'EVEN THE LONGEST JOURNEY STARTS WITH ONE SMALL STEP'

MOTHER: THAT’S THE SPIRIT, YOU'RE A LOT BRAVER THAN I WAS WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE. DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK ANY OF YOUR *SPECIAL* QUESTIONS, THIS IS THE TIME FOR LEARNING

Mother waves from outside the school through the wire at Jo who is disappearing in to the porta cabin classroom

MOTHER: THEY GROW UP SO FAST, WHERE DOES THE TIME GO? LETS HOPE SHE CAN FIND SOME ANSWERS.

The 9 children sit facing the teacher on little chairs in an non regular pattern

TEACHER: WELL NOW WE KNOW WHO WE ALL ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS?

JO: PLEASE MISS, WHERE DO WE COME FROM?

PAGE 2

In a science museum the teacher leads the 9 children on a school trip. It is a typical Victorian museum, massive open spaces, with the obligatory dinosaur skeleton centre stage and various flying horrors hanging from the ceiling. One will used as a hang glider later. To one side is Sharry the slightly deranged cleaner with his wheely rubbish collector stuffed with cleaning equipment.

TEACHER: WELL HERE WE ARE. A GREAT DAY OUT AND ALL THE ANSWER'S YOU'LL EVER NEED HARE HERE. OVER MANY MILLIONS OF YEARS ANIMALS HAVE REPRODUCED, YES JOHNNY THAT’S THE YUCKY STUFF DADDY AND MOMMY DO. ANYWAY THESE MATINGS HAVE PRODUCED A WIDE VARIETY OF ANIMALS, INCLUDING THE EXTINCT THESAURUS SO SE RECREATED IN IT'S GLORY HERE AND OF COURSE US.

SHARRY: POPPYCOCK

The teacher leads the party around a curved balcony of the museum from left to right. Central is a dangling model of the double helix of DNA. Sharry follows them

TEACHER: THAT HELTER SKELTER LIKE MODEL IS THE MAGICAL BUILDING BLOCK OF LIFE. FROM IT YOU CAN MAKE ANYTHING. YES JOHNNY INCLUDING ROAD KILL.

SHARRY: BALDERDASH

The teacher leads the party around a curved balcony of the museum from right to left. Central is a dangling model of the double helix of DNA. Sharry cleans behind them

TEACHER: ORIGINALLY IT WAS BELIEVED SUPREME BEINGS OR EVEN ALIENS CREATED LIFE BUT SCIENCE CONCLUSIVELY PROVED OTHERWISE. YES JOHNNY THE BANG WAS BIGGER THAN WHEN YOU BROKE YOUR CHAIR

SHARRY: RUBBISH

A box out of Jo staring at Sharry puzzled

The children sit in a cinema to watch a huge planetarium presentation. Sharry cleans very close to Jo

TEACHER: YES THAT’S US THERE. NO JOHNNY IT'S PRONOUNCED YOU-RAN-USS

SHARRY: HOOKUM

PAGE 3

Jo has left the cinema to catch up with Sharry who is still intently cleaning

JO: O GRADY SAYS 'WHICHEVER INTERPRETATION PREVAILS AT A GIVEN TIME IS A FUNCTION OF POWER AND NOT TRUTH'

SHARRY: SARDINES

JO: YOU MUST KNOW EVERYTHING THAT GOES ON AROUND HERE

SHARRY: PILTDOWN

Sharry leaves and heads towards his janitor's closet, Jo follows

JO: PLEASE SHOW ME, I WANT TO UNDERSTAND

SHARRY: IRON PYRITES

JO: YOUR SLIPPING, YOU'RE ONLY MEANT TO UTTER SINGLE WORDS

Viewed from inside the room in frame 4 Jo bursts in the doorway past Sharry

SHARRY: VENDI

JO: VIDI

A huge room with the doorway from frame 3 just visible high up on the left. Its has many levels and is filled with boxes statues, tapestries and ornaments of a religious persuasion

SHARRY: VICI

JO: SO YOU'RE A FAN OF O' GRADY. BUT EDUCATION'S NOT YOUR STRONG POINT IS IT. YOU MEAN 'THEY WERE HERE, WE CAME AND THEY WERE CONQUERED'

PAGE 4

In a tropical area of her world under a huge geodesic dome Jo wanders

JO: WHY DO I KEEP HITTING DEAD ENDS EACH TIME I GO FOR MY *SPECIAL WALKS'? THERE NO SCIENTIFIC REASON FOR IT

High on the dome Jo climbs trying to open one of the panels

JO: WHEN I WAS WITH MUM THESE PANELS WERE INVISIBLE LOOKING LIKE OPEN SKY. YET UP HERE THEY ARE OPAQUE YOU CAN'T EVEN SEE OUT

Below ground is a huge industrial complex through which Jo scavenges

JO: WHEN DAD BROUGHT ME HERE DURING 'BRING YOUR DAUGHTER TO WORK' DAY I THOUGHT THIS WAS A PROCESSING PLANT NOW IT SEEM TO BE ACTUALLY BE FED FROM THE OUTSIDE

Jo has dived into a large pool

JO: THERE'S SOME BARRIER STOPPING US LEAVING UNDERNEATH THIS BUILDING

Jo hikes across hilly country to arrive at an impressive cliff face that drops into a torrential sea

JO: SURELY SOMEWHERE WHERE THE SEA MEETS LAND THERE MUST BE BEACHES OF GROUND SILICA DEPOSITS AND NOT JUST UNERODABLE CLIFFS

Jo launches her self off the cliff and flies using one of the strung up animals from the museum as a hang glider.

JO: LETS SEE IF YOU'RE AN ACCURATE RECONSTRUCTION

PAGE 5

Jo has crashed landed into the sea, the 'hang glider' sinking and she has been rescued by a fisherman

FISHERMAN: YOU WERE LUCKY GIRL, I SPOTTED YOU BEING KIDNAPPED BY THAT FEROCIOUS BIRD AND I MANAGED TO FOLLOW YOU TO UNTIL YOU MANAGED TO LOOSEN IT'S GRIP ON YOU

JO: THANK YOU THAT WATER WAS

FISHERMAN: SO VERY COLD

JO: NO TEPID

Jo back at museum looks over the balconies at the animal collection we saw before, the pace is empty.

JO: WHERE ARE YOU SHARRY?

Jo opens the janitor's closet to see it's been bricked up

JO: THIS SEEMS TO BE A WORLD OF ILLUSIONS

Jo heads forlorn to a door marked as an innocuous fire exit, not concentrating

JO: I GIVE UP. MUMMY SAID SCHOOL WOULD SORT ALL THESE MAD IDEAS OF MINE, BUT NOW NOTHING MAKES ANY SENSE

Jo swings out of the exit to see she has left a huge dome and all she can see for miles in any direction are similar domes.

JO: ALOYOIUS MCMANUS!!!
